Throughout this 25-day adventure, you will navigate deep valleys, high passes, arid landscapes, and follow the trails once frequented by ancient traders and yak caravans across communities that reflect deep Tibetan cultural influences.

Nature Lovers Treks and Tours offers a fully supported camping trek into this off-the-beaten-path destination, as tourism infrastructure is typically minimal on this remote Himalayan trek. Your adventure begins with a flight to Nepalgunj, followed by a connection to the Juphal trailhead. From here, you will traverse the diverse landscape, comprising lush subtropical regions, before entering the barren highlands offering uninterrupted views of the Himalayas. Your journey continues across the challenging Kang La Pass (5,360 meters) and Shey Gompa, the spiritual heartland of Dolpo.

The Upper Dolpo Trek is a long and strenuous journey. Throughout the trek, you will find the majestic Dhaulagiri massif accompanying you as you pass through traditional Tibetan-Buddhist-inspired communities. In Saldang and Dho Tarap, you can also witness the pre-Buddhist Bon-Po religion.

Why Go on the Upper Dolpo Trek in Nepal?

The Upper Dolpo Trek is a long-duration journey into the remote and isolated Himalayan regions of Western Nepal. Suitable for experienced trekkers seeking a high-altitude escape, this trek introduces you to raw adventure on some of the most serene trails.

Here are the top reasons to join this incredible, life-changing experience in the Nepali Himalayas:

The Crystal Mountain and Shey Gompa: The visit to the spiritual center of Shey Gompa is the apex destination of the Nepal Upper Dolpo Trek. To reach this 11th-century monastery, one must trek along the base of the holy Crystal Mountain. Here, you can experience profound spirituality and peace underneath the shadows of the sacred Himalayas.

Trek to Phoksundo Lake: Our 25-day Upper Dolpo Trek itinerary includes a profound and rewarding journey to the turquoise Phoksundo Lake. This visual high-altitude masterpiece offers a crystal-clear view of the lake, whose shades change with the sun's rays. You can collect unforgettable memories as you camp by this mesmerizing lake, surrounded by steep rocky cliffs.

Witness Ancient Bon Culture: Upper Dolpo is one of the only remaining regions that practice the ancient Bon-Po religion. This culture, which predates Tibetan Buddhism, offers unique and interesting practices that you wouldn’t find elsewhere. Bon Culture practices are prominent in high-altitude villages like Dho Tarap, which is also one of the highest human settlements on earth. Here, you can interact with the locals, observe their ancient traditions, and witness a lifestyle that has remained unchanged for centuries.

Traverse the High Himalayan Passes: The Upper Dolpo Trek takes you across two major passes, the Kang-La Pass (5,360 meters) and the Jeng-La Pass (5,090 meters). Though strenuous, conquering these passes offers a profound sense of accomplishment and mesmerizing views of the Himalayan landscape, including the Dhaulagiri range, the Kanjirowa Himal, and the vast, arid Tibetan Plateau.

A Typical Day During the Upper Dolpo Trek

The Upper Dolpo Trek is an off-the-beaten-path adventure into the remote regions of the Himalayas. On this camping-style expedition, you will find a different experience than the typical teahouse treks. Each day, you wake up at around 6:00 AM. You will enjoy a hot cup of tea in your tent, followed by a hot breakfast. While you enjoy your breakfast, embracing the cold mountain breeze and majestic landscapes, our team of porters dismantles the camp.

Your trek typically begins at around 7:30 AM. Each day, you are required to traverse varying terrains, from deep gorges to high plateaus. The trails are narrow and rocky, with yak caravans often sharing the trails.

Lunch is served at a scenic site en route to your overnight destination at around noon. This is your opportunity to rest and reenergize for the rest of the day’s trek. The afternoon trek is typically shorter. Depending on your destination, you may be required to cross a pass or descend into a valley.

After a day’s trek, you will reach your overnight campsite by late afternoon. By the time you reach your destination, you will have your tents already set. After spending some time unwinding, you can explore the surrounding villages or monasteries before heading back to your campsite for a warm dinner in the dining tent. After dinner, you will head to your designated tent for a much-deserved rest under a canopy of stars.

After breakfast in your hotel in Kathmandu, you will prepare to leave for the airport to board your flight to Nepalgunj. A scenic 1-hour flight takes you to one of the major business hubs, located near the Nepal-India border. You have the rest of the day for yourself. Take this opportunity to explore the local market and prepare for your flight to the mountains the following day.

Day 3

Fly from Nepalgunj to Juphal (2,320m) and trek to Dunai

Your day begins with an early morning flight to the trailhead of Juphal. The flight is short but offers scenic views of the Dhaulagiri and Annapurna ranges. The small airstrip of Juphal welcomes you to the starting point of your Upper Dolpo Trek. From the Juphal airstrip, you will begin your trek with a descent through terraced fields to the Bheri River before beginning an upstream hike to Dunai, the district headquarters of Dolpa.

Day 4

Trek from Dunai to Ankhe

Today, you will trek to Ankhe, the gateway to the Shey Phoksundo National Park. Leaving Dunai, you will cross a suspension bridge as you prepare to ascend the Thulo Bheri Valley. The trail leads you to the Phoksundo River Valley as you pass through villages like Rahagaon. Continue your hike through walnut groves to your overnight destination in Ankhe.

Day 5

Trek from Ankhe to Sulighat

Today’s trek is a mix of ascents and descents. You will trek through dense forests before reaching the narrow and precipitous trails. The trek continues across a ridge giving a spectacular view of the Phoksundo Waterfall, the highest in Nepal, before descending to Sulighat.

Day 6

Trek from Sulighat to Phoksundo Lake (3,350m)

Leaving Sulighat behind, the trek continues along the valley floor to the meeting point of Phoksundo and Pungmo Rivers. You will cross this river confluence over a suspension bridge and journey through the cedar forest to Ringmo Village. Ringmo is a traditional Tibetan village that flaunts its rich heritage. A short walk from here takes you to the shores of the awe-inspiring Phoksundo Lake.

Day 7

Rest day at Phoksundo Lake

Today is a day dedicated to rest and acclimatization. You can begin the day by exploring the Ringmo Village and taking a spiritual detour to the 900-year-old Bon monastery, Tshwo Gompa. The monastery is located on a ridge above the Phoksundo Lake. You will also visit the mesmerizing lake and spend the day admiring the surreal turquoise waters and the surrounding glaciers.

Day 8

Trek from Phoksundo Lake to Phoksundo Khola

Leaving the Phoksundo Lake behind, you will truly begin the Upper Dolpo Trek. Your journey follows the trails along the western edge of the Phoksundo Lake. This is an adventurous trail as it involves walking on a wooden walkway supported by pegs driven into rock crevices. Continue further to the floodplain of the Phoksundo Khola before trekking through a remote valley to reach your overnight campsite.

Day 9

Trek from Phoksundo Khola to Phoksundo Bhanjyang

You will continue your trek through the glacial valley and cross several rivers on today’s trek. As you reach closer toward High Camp, you will find the trails become increasingly rugged. From here, you will ascend a steep ravine before reaching the sheep meadow of Phoksundo Bhanjyang.

Day 10

Trek from Phoksundo Bhanjyang to Shey Gompa via Kang-La Pass (5,360m)

Today is one of the most challenging days of your 25-day Upper Dolpo Trek in Nepal. Alongside the mountainous terrain, you will also gain a significant altitude. Your trek from Phoksundo Bhanjyang begins with a steep climb to the Kang-La Pass (5,360 meters). The trail is strenuous, but reaching the summit gives you awe-inspiring views of the Himalayan landscape, including the Crystal Mountain ahead. From Kang-La Pass, you will begin your descent into the spiritual hub of Upper Dolpo to Shey Gompa.

Day 11

Rest day at Shey Gompa

Today is another day dedicated to rest and acclimatization. Acclimatization while trekking in the Himalayas is crucial as it allows your body to adapt to the high altitude conditions, significantly reducing the risks of altitude sickness.

Your itinerary today includes exploration of the 11th-century Shey Gompa, located at the confluence of two rivers beneath the Crystal Mountain. You can also visit the Tsakang Gompa, a monastic retreat nestled on a cliff face.

Day 12

Trek from Shey Gompa to Namduna Gaun via Saldang La (5,200m)

As you leave Shey Gompa behind, you will continue your journey through juniper forests toward the Saldang La Pass (5,200 meters). Reaching the summit of this incredible pass gives you stunning views of the arid Himalayan landscape. From the Saldang La Pass, you will descend northward, toward Namduna Gaun. Upon reaching your destination, you can explore the red stone Namduna Monastery.

Day 13

Trek from Namduna Gaun to Saldang

Your journey today takes you to the terraced fields of Saldang. This is the largest village in the inner Dolpo region and is known for its strategic location on the trade route to Tibet. Here, you can witness high-altitude agricultural practices, explore the locality, and interact with the villagers.

Day 14

Trek from Saldang to Yangze Gompa

From Saldang, you will trek along the Nagon Khola river that takes you further northward. Your trek takes you through the barren lands eroded by strong, high-altitude winds. A 4 to 5-hour trek takes you to the Yangze Gompa. You can also take a detour to the ancient Bon-Po monastery for a spiritual experience within this less-visited section of the Dolpo region.

Day 15

Trek from Yangze Gompa to Sibu

Your day begins by retracing your path briefly back to Saldang. From Saldang, you will divert toward Sibu, passing through small settlements, including Chaiba. You will reach your campsite after approximately 7 hours of hiking. Your campsite is situated by the river in the serene village of Sibu.

Day 16

Trek from Sibu to Jeng-la Phedi

Today’s trek takes you along the Nam Khong Khola. The initial sections of the trails are easy, but gradually start to ascend toward the base of the Jeng La Pass. You will set up camp at Phedi (base of the pass). Get plenty of rest, as you will be taking on another challenging pass tomorrow.

Day 17

Trek from Jeng-la Phedi to Tokyu Gaon via Jeng La Pass (5,090m)

The journey across the Jeng La Pass (5,090 meters) begins early. You will navigate your way through the rocky terrain to the top of the pass. This is another challenging section that provides a profound sense of accomplishment and excellent views of the Dhaulagiri massif upon completing the summit. From Jeng La Pass, you will descend into the Tarap Valley and make your way to the Tokyu Gaon.

Day 18

Trek from Tokyu to Dho Tarap

The journey to Dho Tarap from Tokyu involves a short-duration descent. Compared to the previous day’s ascent, today’s journey is more relaxed. Upon reaching Dho Tarap, you will find a large Dolpa-pa (Tibetan descent) community with traditional stone houses. This is a major junction and trading post of the Dolpo region. You can witness the distinct Bon Po religion and its practices in this village.

Day 19

Rest day at Dho Tarap

You will spend a day exploring Dho Tarap. The day is more relaxed with a leisurely itinerary. During the day, you can visit the local monastery and observe the quaint lifestyle of the locals. Here, you will encounter women dressed in unique headdresses made of turquoise and amber.

Day 20

Trek from Dho Tarap to Kamakharka

As you depart from Dho Tarap, you will leave the high valleys behind. The journey takes you downstream of the Tarap Khola. You will experience the valley narrowing into a deep gorge as you enter the trail carved into the cliffsides. A 6 to 7-hour hike takes you to your overnight camp at Kamakharka, beside the Tarap Khola.

Day 21

Trek from Tarap Khola to Khanigaon

Your descent continues through the Tarap River gorge. As you continue your journey, you will notice a gradual change in the landscape as you reach a lower-elevation zone. You will encounter more vegetation and warmer temperatures. Your overnight camp today is at Khanigaon, a winter settlement for the locals of Dho Tarap.

Day 22

Trek from Khanigaon to Tarakot

As you leave Khanigaon, you will trek to the village of Lalberi. The trek takes you through lush forests toward Tarakot, an old fortress built on a hill. Tarakot, a community with a strong Magar presence, is also historically significant, having served as the region’s capital.

Day 23

Trek from Tarakot to Juphal via Dunai

Today is the final day of trekking. Your journey descends from Tarakot along the Bheri River toward Dunai. From Dunai, you will take on a brief ascent toward Juphal. Your final day along the Upper Dolpo Trekking trails marks the end of the hiking loop. In Juphal, you can celebrate this memorable fete with your trekking crew and support staff.

Day 24

Essential Information

The Nepal Upper Dolpo Trek takes you into the high-altitude trans-Himalayan region. Located in the rain shadow of the Dhaulagiri range, it receives less rainfall and is accessible even during the monsoon season.

Spring (April to May) is an excellent time for the 25-day Upper Dolpo Trek. These months offer pleasant weather, and the high passes are generally snow-free. In the lower regions, you will find lush forests adorned in vibrant spring blossoms.

Autumn (September to November) is the most popular time for the Upper Dolpo expedition. You will find clear skies with uninterrupted views of the Himalayan landscapes. In autumn, temperatures are stable throughout the day. However, nights can be colder, especially at higher altitudes. We recommend packing accordingly.

Upper Dolpo Trekking in Monsoon (June to August) is also possible as it lies in the rainshadow. However, flights to and from Juphal airstrip are unpredictable and frequently disrupted by bad weather conditions. Likewise, lower altitude regions that receive rainfall can have slippery trails infested with leeches.

Upper Dolpo Trek Difficulty

The Upper Dolpo Trek is a strenuous journey into the high-altitude trans-Himalayan region. Each day requires 6 to 7 hours of trekking at altitudes consistently above 4,000 meters. The trail crosses two passes over 5,000 meters (Kang-La Pass and Jeng-La Pass).

Moreover, unlike the teahouse trek, you will spend most of your nights under the stars in tented camps. You will need to adapt to outdoor living throughout your trek. Also, the terrain is rugged, remote, and isolated. It is recommended that each trekker have previous experience, excellent physical fitness, and mental resilience.

Altitude sickness can be a serious issue if proper precautions are not taken. To reduce such risks, our itinerary includes several acclimatization stops.

Who can go on the Upper Dolpo Trek in Nepal?

The 25-day Upper Dolpo Trek is recommended for:

  • Experienced trekkers looking for a challenging, off-the-beaten-path adventure
  • Travelers with ample time who want to disconnect from the modern world
  • Cultural enthusiasts interested in the ancient Bon-Po religion and Tibetan lifestyle
  • Nature lovers seeking solitude, rare wildlife (Snow Leopard, Blue Sheep), and dramatic landscapes
