Trek to Annapurna Base Camp via Poon Hill is more than just a hike. It is a high-impact route designed for fit trekkers looking to reach 4,130 meters. This condensed ABC with Poon Hill trek is a viable alternative to the 15-day ABC trek, offering a journey of a lifetime through the legendary Annapurna trails, blending geographical transitions with deep cultural roots.

Unlike standard treks, you will experience a rapid geological transition on this journey. In the lower regions, you will find the earthy scent of the sub-tropical rhododendron. The initial leg of your journey takes you to the Poon Hill viewpoint, where you get a preview of the Annapurna massif before heading into the rugged glacial trails.

Nature Lovers Treks and Tours guides lead you masterfully along the diverse paths to the edge of the famed sanctuary. Together, we will experience the sheer verticality of Annapurna I and the 8000-meter peaks of the Himalayas. From personal experience, we assure you that the demanding stair steps of Ghorepani will get your heart to “thud” against your ribs. However, the modern hotels/teahouses allow you to complete your day with ample rest and utmost comfort.

Join us on a seamless Himalayan journey. Our travel experts manage all logistics, including transport from Pokhara, ACAP and TIMS permits, and comfortable teahouse stays. You can enjoy views of the vast Himalayan landscapes, including the views of Machhapuchhre and Annapurna, as you explore the intersection of nature and spirituality.

Why go on the 12-day Annapurna Base Camp trek via Poon Hill?

The 12-day Annapurna Base Camp with Poon Hill Trek is a condensed trek. While suitable for trekkers with limited time, this can be physically demanding, especially for first-timers. We recommend this for experienced travellers who respect the resilience of the mountain people and are ready for a high-intensity challenge.

Here are the top reasons to follow this 12-day itinerary:

The Silence of Poon Hill Sunrise: You might have heard most people brag about the “pink and gold” Himalayan sky during sunrise. However, the silence as you surround yourself with the icy giants is unmatched. We hike to the 3,210-meter viewpoint, listening to the rhythm of our steps and breathing heavily as we approach our destination. As the sun rays emerge from the sky, the silence turns to jubilation. The cold air suddenly feels different, making the early 4:00 AM wake-up call worthwhile.

The ABC Amphitheater: The Annapurna Base Camp Trail is a personal favorite for most of our guides. Different from the Everest trek, where the peak often feels distant, the Annapurna Sanctuary trek gives an intimate experience, where you don’t just look at the mountains from the 4,130-meter Annapurna Base Camp, but experience the 360-degree wall of rock and ice as you stand on the glacial basin of the Annapurna. We have noticed that most trekkers go silent as the sudden realization of standing at the feet of Annapurna I suddenly hits them.

Warm Himalayan Hospitality: The high-altitude trek of the Annapurna region takes you along the living museum, a home for the Gurung and Magar communities. You will walk through the heart of the village and see locals drying grains on stone patios. You can also interact with the school children. We recommend keeping your camera ready, as the contrast between stone architecture, laid-back lifestyle, and the looming peaks provides some of the best photo opportunities.

A typical day during the Annapurna Base Camp via Poonhill Trek

On the Annapurna Base Camp via Poon Hill Trek, we travel with the sun. Our mornings begin at around 6:30 AM. We understand your bodies are tired, and the chilly mountain breeze doesn’t make waking up any easier. However, efficiency is the key to a successful trek.

First, you fuel for the day’s trek with a hearty breakfast. Most teahouses serve a variety of food, including pancakes and porridges. You can also try the local favorite, the deep-fried Gurung Bread. This slightly sweet bread is calorie-dense and is a staple breakfast in the Annapurna region.

After breakfast, you will take on the ascents and descents along the trails. The morning trek is usually more demanding as you are required to navigate the winding stone paths and cross suspension bridges. Around noon, you will stop at a local teahouse. The smell of a wood-fired stove indicates your lunch is being prepared.

In the Annapurna region, we abide by the saying: “Dal Bhat Power, 24 Hour.” You will find a platter of rice and lentil soup, which replenishes your calories and also energizes you for the remainder of the trek. To ensure you are well hydrated, drink plenty of water.

By late afternoon, you will reach your overnight teahouse. This is the time for mountain social life. You can join us in the communal dining area over a cozy fireplace. Here, we share our travel tales before our dinner arrives.

Before heading to bed, we huddle one last time to brief you on tomorrow’s itinerary. We discuss the weather conditions, terrain, and challenges to ensure you are mentally prepared for the next leg of the impactful Annapurna Base Camp via Poon Hill Trek 2026/2027.

Annapurna Base Camp Trek via Poonhill - 12 Days Detailed Itinerary

This itinerary is flexible and can be adjusted based on your pace, interests, and weather conditions. Your guide will help you make any necessary changes along the way to ensure a comfortable and enjoyable trek experience.

Day 1

Arrival in Tribhuvan International Airport | Transfer to Hotel

Welcome to Nepal

Upon arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport, Kathmandu, you will be greeted by your representative and transferred to your hotel. Take some time to rest and recover from your journey. If your schedule allows, you can explore the lively streets of Thamel, enjoy a local meal, or simply relax and prepare for the trekking adventure ahead.

Day 2

Drive from Kathmandu to Pokhara (822m)

Pokhara City

After breakfast, you will begin your journey from Kathmandu to Pokhara by tourist bus or private vehicle. The drive takes you through scenic valleys, terraced farmlands, and small villages, offering a glimpse of rural life in Nepal. Along the way, you can enjoy the views of rivers, hills, and distant mountain peaks.

Upon arrival in Pokhara, check into your hotel and take some time to relax. In the evening, you can explore the Lakeside area, enjoy a leisurely walk along Phewa Lake, or shop for trekking essentials.

Day 3

Drive from Pokhara to Ulleri (2,050m) & trek to Ghorepani (2,860m)

Ghorepani

Expect a bumpy yet scenic jeep drive from Pokhara to Ulleri as the road gradually turns into rugged off-road terrain, offering a real glimpse into Himalayan life. The trek begins at the famous Ulleri stone steps, where the steady climb quickly tests your legs. As you ascend, blooming rhododendron forests and passing mule caravans provide welcome distractions and moments to pause. After around 5 to 6 hours of trekking, you’ll arrive in Ghorepani, recognizable by its blue-roofed houses and cool mountain air. Evening time here is perfect for relaxing with a hot cup of milk chai while watching mist drift across the surrounding Himalayan peaks.

Pro tip: The Ulleri steps are tough. Keep a slow, steady pace. It’s a long endurance climb, not a race.

Day 4

Early morning hike to Poonhill (3,210m) & trek to Tadapani (2,630m)

Tadapani

The second day begins with a 4:00 AM alarm. Believe us, hopping out of the warm bed is next to impossible, but we have our Himalayan dreams that lie ahead. In the silence of the darkness, you will join our guides to hike to the Poon Hill viewpoint. Our personal experiences say you will enjoy the sunrise as the first rays peek out of the 8000-meter crest of Dhaulagiri.

After sunrise, you will head back to your teahouse for breakfast, then descend into the mystical forest toward Tadapani. It feels like stepping into a fairy tale as we walk through the ancient moss-covered trees before reaching our overnight destination.

Day 5

Trek from Tadapani to Sinuwa (2,340m) via Chhomrong

Sinuwa

Today is another demanding day. Prepare to test your knees as you start with a massive descent to Kimrong Khola before a steep climb up. The sight of the Machhapuchhre (Fishtail) getting closer keep our spirits high as we approach Sinuwa. From Sinuwa, you will find views of the deep valleys you have just crossed.

Day 6

Trek from Sinuwa to Deurali (3,200m)

As you leave Sinuwa, you enter the dense bamboo and rhododendron forest. If you let your imagination run wild, you will feel like an explorer in an untouched world. Carry on taking in the earthy scent of the forest with a steady incline. As our trek takes us to a higher altitude, you'll notice your breath becoming shorter. This is also a reminder to respect the high-altitudes of the Himalayas. Also, we recommend keeping your scarf or buff prepared, as the air can get quite dusty and dry near Hinku Cave.

Continue the trek listening to the roar of the Modi Khola before reaching Deurali.

Day 7

Trek from Deurali to Annapurna Base Camp (4,130m) via Machhapuchhre Base Camp

Machhapuchhre Base Camp

The trek to Annapurna Base Camp can be truly emotional. Walking into the Annapurna Sanctuary, you will find yourself surrounded by vertical walls of hanging glaciers. Upon reaching the ABC, the colorful prayer flags and the ABC signpost feels like a personal triumph. You are now finally on the 4,130-meter Annapurna Base Camp, experiencing the unique intersection of nature and spirituality.

Day 8

Trek down from Annapurna Base Camp to Bamboo (2,310m)

Annapurna Base Camp

After spending a night beneath the stars in the Himalayas, it’s time to descend. You will follow the familiar trails. With every few hundred meters of descent, your lungs will feel lighter as the oxygen level increases. By the time we reach the lower forests, we feel a warm, thick air, which feel like a welcoming relief.

Day 9

Trek from Bamboo to Jhinu Danda (1,780m) via Chhomrong

Hot Spring (Jhinu)

Today, you will trek through Chhomrong, which involves the notorious stone steps. This is a demanding challenge. If you have a history of weak knees, we would recommend wearing knee braces. After the strenuous descent, the Jhinu Hot Springs will help relax and rejuvenate. Soaking in the warm waters of the natural hot spring is truly a blissful moment.

Day 10

Trek from Jhinu Danda to Birethanti (1,025m) & drive to Pokhara

Birethanti Checkpost

You have come to the end of your Annapurna adventure. This is a bittersweet moment. As you look back at the Annapurna range one last time, you too will feel a deep sense of gratitude. After crossing the long suspension bridge, you will drive back to Pokhara. Treat yourself to some pizza or momo. You have earned your calories. We recommend any of the vibrant lakeside cafes to celebrate your successful 8-day Annapurna Base Camp via Poon Hill Trek with your group.

Day 11

Drive back to Kathmandu

Please be ready in the hotel lobby by 6:00 AM for breakfast and a briefing with your guide. You will either drive back to Kathmandu (around 7 hours, depending on road conditions) or take a scenic 30-minute flight from Pokhara at an additional cost, which offers beautiful views of the Himalayas, hills, and countryside.

Essential Information

When is the best time for the Annapurna Base Camp via Poon Hill trek in 2026/2027?

Trekking the Annapurna Base Camp and Poon Hill in Nepal is a high-altitude adventure where timing is critical. The Himalayas are known for having dramatic weather patterns. Therefore, we recommend checking and monitoring the local mountain weather to help prepare better for your adventure.

Spring (March to May) is a vibrant season. The lower sub-tropical regions come to life with rhododendron and wildflower blossoms. You will experience warm weather with increased daylight. However, in recent years, trekkers have experienced more afternoon clouds. So, a head start in the morning is essential for clear mountain views.

Autumn (September to November) is the peak trekking season. The post-monsoon skies offer the clearest views. However, due to global warming, the monsoon has stayed back up to the late monsoon. Planning your trek from mid-October ensures more stable and safer conditions.

While winter treks are possible, the sanctuary receives heavy snow. In late 2025, the Annapurna trails experienced winter storms, making the weather more unpredictable. We only recommend trekking in Annapurna in winter for experienced trekkers with high-quality gear.

How difficult is the Annapurna Base Camp via Poon Hill trek in Nepal?

The 12-day Annapurna Base Camp via Poon Hill Trek is a challenging but manageable journey. You will find well-maintained trails and plenty of accommodations with modern amenities. For locals, this is a daily commute, but the rapid elevation gain and the 3000 stone steps can be demanding for most trekkers.

If you were to abide by the instructions of the locals, like us, you would drink plenty of garlic soup to help with acclimatization. This is a traditional Himalayan remedy that is believed to thin the blood and cope with lower oxygen levels. Also, we recommend maintaining a steady pace to reduce the risks of Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS).

Who can trek to Annapurna Base Camp via Poon Hill?

The Annapurna Base Camp and Poon Hill Trek is recommended for the following trekkers:

  • Active individuals who can handle 6 to 8 hours of daily walking on uneven and steep terrain
  • Sunrise seekers looking for the world’s most beautiful sunrise from Poon Hill
  • Cultural enthusiasts wanting to connect with the Gurung and Magar communities
  • First-Time Himalayan trekkers looking for high-altitude trekking below the 5,000-meter altitude
