The Upper Mustang Trek with Luri Gumba takes you on a complete loop of the ancient kingdom of Mustang over 14 days. Contrary to the standard Upper Mustang Trek, this adventure includes a visit to the spectacular cave monastery of Luri Gumba. Perched on a sandstone cliff, this monastery is famous for its ancient thangka painting, Buddhist murals, and chortens. You will also visit iconic destinations like Muktinath as you blend cultural discovery with breathtaking views of arid desert-like landscapes on this physically challenging Upper Mustang Trek with Luri Gumba.

Similar to your other journeys to Upper Mustang, the return journey is equally fascinating. Instead of highway path, you will take an alternative route toward Yara and Ghara. Here, the landscapes are more isolated and profound as you trail along off-the-beaten-path routes. The trek passes through the iconic Luri Gumba and continues along the stunning plateau-top village of Tangge. This trail also takes you across high-altitude ridges before descending to Lo Manthang, the capital of former Mustang Kingdom.

The 14-day Upper Mustang and Luri Gumba Trek takes you on a deep spiritual journey into the untouched regions of the Trans-Himalayas. Join this comprehensive trek suitable for physically fit travelers with a knack for cultural exploration and profound adventure. 2026/2027 slots are limited. Why Go on the Nepal Upper Mustang Trek with Luri Gumba?

The Upper Mustang Trek with Luri Gumba is a distinct trek from the standard Upper Mustang Tour. Nature Lovers Treks and Tours takes you on an immersive adventure along the “Eastern Circuit” of the trans-Himalayan Mustang region. Less frequented by tourists, you can explore the well-preserved spiritual centers and soak in the serene Himalayan atmosphere.

Here are the top reasons to choose this exclusive Himalayan trekking route.

Luri Gumba Exploration: Luri Gumba is the crown jewel of Eastern Mustang. Visiting this ancient monastery introduces you to one of the premier rock-cut cave architectures of the 13th or 14th century. Here, you can explore the inner sanctum of the Kabung Stupa. Adorned with intricate Kagyupa-sect murals that have remained perfectly preserved for centuries. Take this opportunity to soak in the rare spiritual artistry on the remote cliffside, hidden from conventional tourists.

Traverse the Eastern Circuit: The eastern circuit of Upper Mustang is remote and isolated, while the western route has seen road development. As you return from Lo Manthang, you will travel along the eastern trails, across villages like Yara, Ghara, and Tangge. All these remote villages remain rugged and offer a trekking-only experience. Along your journey, you will steer away from modernization as you traverse high plateaus and deep river gorges, soaking in an authentic Himalayan experience.

Explore the Walled City of Lo Manthang: As you reach Lo Manthang, you will find yourself back in ancient times. In this living museum, you can explore the maze-like alleys surrounded by 6-meter-high medieval walls. You can also visit the king’s palace and enter the massive Jampa, Thupchen, and Choede monasteries. Watch the resident monks practicing age-old Tibetan Buddhist rituals amid the towering statues of Maitreya in these ancient monasteries.

Experience the Ancient Cave Civilization: Apart from the unique high-altitude desert landscapes, the region is also known for its ancient archeological wonders. Particularly around Chhoser, you can witness man-made “sky caves” that are carved on high cliff faces. These caves date back thousands of years, giving shelter and also serving as sacred spots for meditation and burial.

A Typical Day During the Upper Mustang Trek

A typical day during the Forbidden Kingdom trek in Upper Mustang and Luri Gompa begins early. At around 6:30 AM, you will wake up and head for a hearty breakfast at your teahouse. You will leave your teahouse and head on the trails by 7:30 or 8:00 AM. Your morning hikes offer crisp and clear views of the Nilgiri and Dhaulagiri ranges that contrast with the brown and red high-altitude desert hills.

Lunch is served at around noon. Unlike the lower Himalayan destination, the villages in Upper Mustang are spread out. Lunch is often taken in small settlements. You may even need to carry packed meals, which can be enjoyed at a scenic spot. After lunch, you will continue your afternoon trek, typically lasting 2 to 3 hours.

Around late afternoon or early evening, you will reach your overnight destination. Your teahouses are simple but offer a comfortable stay. If time is by your side, you can explore the local communities, ancient monasteries, and interact with the locals.

Dinner is served in a communal dining hall. You can share your travel tales with your fellow trekkers over a warm meal. After dinner, you will receive a briefing from our guide about the next day’s adventure.

At the arrival gates, representatives of Nature Lovers Treks and Tours will greet you and transfer you to your hotel in the heart of Kathmandu’s tourist district, Thamel. Upon checking in, you can rest and unwind. A short trek briefing will be held in the evening.

Day 2

Drive from Kathmandu (1,400m) to Pokhara (950m)

Mugling

Your day begins with an early breakfast at your hotel. After breakfast, you will leave for the Lake City of Pokhara on a comfortable tourist bus. The scenic journey takes you along the winding Prithivi Highway, alongside the Trishuli and Marshyangdi Rivers. This drive offers you glimpses of the quaint rural lifestyle.

After 7 to 8 hours, you will reach the serene Pokhara Lakeside. In the evening, you can enjoy a leisurely stroll by the Phewa Lake or enjoy the calm waters by the Lakeside cafes.

Day 3

Fly to Jomsom (2,743m) | Trek to Kagbeni (2,850m)

Jomsom

Prepare for a thrilling early morning flight from Pokhara to Jomsom. This short 25-minute flight takes you through the deepest gorge in the world between Annapurna and Dhaulagiri.

Jomsom is known for its strong winds; therefore, flights are operated only in the early hours. Upon landing in Jomsom, you will begin your trek along the Kali Gandaki riverbed. You can enjoy the beautiful landscapes as you make your way to your overnight destination in Kagbeni. Kagbeni, the gateway to Upper Mustang, is a medieval village known for its picturesque narrow alleyways.

Day 4

Trek from Kagbeni to Muktinath (3,800m)

Muktinath

Time to begin the trek to the forbidden kingdom from Kagbeni, where Tibetan culture, architecture, and spirituality are instantly felt. Taking a quieter route away from vehicles, the trail climbs gently through traditional Tibetan-style villages, serene landscapes, and sacred Buddhist monasteries, offering a peaceful and reflective journey.

The short trekking day ends at Muktinath (Ranipauwa), surrounded by stunning Himalayan views. Visit the revered Muktinath Temple and stay overnight to explore the village, connect with local culture, and experience the spiritual essence of this remarkable Himalayan settlement.

Day 5

Trek from Muktinath to Chhusang (2,980m) via Gyu La Pass (4,077m)

Chhusang

After breakfast, the trek begins from Muktinath through narrow alleys toward Jheng (Dzeng), offering beautiful views of Ranipauwa and the Nilgiri Range. The trail descends to a suspension bridge before gradually climbing to Gyu La Pass, reached in a couple of hours, where the landscape dramatically shifts into the dry, canyon-filled terrain that signals entry into Upper Mustang.

From the pass, the route descends steadily toward Tetang, with chances to see sheep and goat herds along the eroded trail. After lunch in Tetang, the trek continues along the road to Chhusang, where permits are checked before settling into a teahouse with time to relax and explore the village.

Day 6

Trek from Chhusang to Tangge (3,240m) via Paa Pass (4210m)

Tangge

This is the toughest day of the trek, taking a full day to reach Tangge from Chhusang, so strong mental and physical preparation is essential. There are no villages or reliable water sources along the way, except seasonal streams near Paa Pass, so carrying enough water and a packed lunch is necessary.

The trail begins with a steep climb, followed by a mix of gradual ascents and descents along the Siyarko Tangk Danda ridge toward Paa Pass (4,210 m). From the pass, Tangge village appears deceptively close, but a long, steep descent follows, ending near a suspension bridge. After walking alongside the river and crossing another bridge, you reach Tangge by dusk—time for a well-earned dinner and rest.

Day 7

Trek from Tangge to Yara (3,650m)

Yara

After breakfast, the trek starts later than usual as it is easier than the previous day. The trail begins with a short uphill, then opens into a long stretch of flat terrain, making the walk relaxed and comfortable.

After a brief climb, the path descends to Dhechyang Khola, passing a large apple farm where lunch is prepared at a small farmhouse. After lunch, cross the suspension bridge and continue along gentle ascents and flat trails, with views of Ghara and Dhi villages, before descending to Yara village for an overnight stay.

Day 8

Explore and Visit Luri Gumba / Gompa (4,005m)

Luri Gompa

Today is a relaxed exploration and rest day, essential after several challenging trekking days. After breakfast, you will visit the magical Luri Gompa and Tashi Kabung by following an alternative route along the Nuyung Khola, where Tashi Kabung is hidden within a cliff wall.

The trail is mostly flat and easy, leading to Luri Gompa in a couple of hours. After spending time at the monasteries, return to Ghara village for lunch and then continue back to Yara, just a short walk away, leaving the rest of the day free for rest and relaxation.

Day 9

Trek from Yara to Lo-Manthang (3,840m) via Dhi La Pass (3,950m)

Dhi

Today marks the approach to the heart and highlight of the Upper Mustang Trek—Lo Manthang. Though shorter, the day begins after breakfast with trails following the road and river toward Surkhang and across the Kali Gandaki to Dhi village.

After Dhi, a steep ascent rewards you with sweeping views of the barren Mustang landscape and peaks like Nilgiri, Tilicho, Thorong, and distant Dhaulagiri. The trail then descends gently toward Lo Manthang, where you arrive by lunchtime. Spend the afternoon exploring the walled city, visiting ancient monasteries such as Chhyode Gompa, Jampa Lhakhang, Thubchen Gompa, and the Royal Palace, before staying overnight.

Day 10

Explore Lo-Manthang (Sightseeing Day)

Lo Manthang

This special day is set aside for exploration and relaxation, with an optional comfortable jeep or bus ride from Lo Manthang to Chhoser. The one-hour off-road drive or 2-3 hours trek journey passes small settlements, offering glimpses of local life amid dusty but scenic terrain.

In Chhoser, explore the remarkable Jhong Cave, known for its ancient formations and links to early Tibetan civilization, and visit nearby monasteries. You may also drive to Kora La (4,660 m) at the Nepal–Tibet border before returning to Lo Manthang, where the final evening is perfect for celebrating the journey and cherishing the memories made.

Day 11

Drive to Jomsom via Ranchung Chungsi cave (3,603m) and many more wonderful sites

Ghami

Today is another day dedicated solely to an excursion. From Yara, you will head to your second highlight of the trek, the Luri Gumba. This ancient cave monastery dates back to the 13th century and is perched precariously on a cliff. Here, you can explore the Kabum Stupa, wrapped in ancient paintings. This stupa is historically significant to the Kagyupa sect of Buddhism.

After exploring the spiritual center and enjoying the awe-inspiring landscapes, you will head back to your teahouse in Yara.

Day 12

Drive from Jomsom to Pokhara

Jomsom Airport

The drive from Jomsom to Pokhara is a scenic and adventurous journey that usually takes 7–8 hours, depending on road and weather conditions. The route follows the Kali Gandaki River, passing apple orchards and villages like Marpha and Tukuche, with impressive views of Dhaulagiri and Nilgiri along the way.

The road is a mix of rough off-road and paved sections, especially between Jomsom and Tatopani, where dust and occasional river crossings are common. After Beni, the drive becomes smoother, and the landscape turns greener as you approach Pokhara, offering a rewarding transition from the dry Mustang region to the lush hills and lakeside city.

Day 13

Fly from Pokhara to Kathmandu
