Gokyo Lake Trek day-to-day Itinerary

Day 01: Arrival in Kathmandu – Transfer to Hotel, Hotel

Welcome to Nepal! Upon your arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) in Kathmandu, you will be greeted by our representative holding a placard with your name. After a warm welcome, you'll be transferred to your hotel in the city. Take the rest of the day to relax after your flight or explore the vibrant streets of Thamel, the tourist hub of Kathmandu.

Day 02: Fly from Kathmandu/Ramechhap to Lukla (2,860m) & Trek to Phakding (2,610m) — 25 min flight & 3/4 hrs trek, BLD, Teahouse

Your adventure begins early in the morning with a scenic flight to Lukla, the gateway to the Everest region. Depending on the season and flight availability, the flight may depart from Kathmandu or Ramechhap. Upon arrival in Lukla, you’ll meet the rest of your trekking crew, and after a short break, begin your trek.

Today's walk is relatively easy, following the Dudh Koshi River through beautiful forests, charming Sherpa villages, and suspension bridges. You'll gradually descend to the village of Phakding, located along the riverside.

Day 03: Trek from Phakding to Namche Bazaar (3,440m) — 6/7 hrs, BLD, Teahouse

Today’s trek takes you deeper into the Khumbu region, following the Dudh Koshi River and crossing several suspension bridges, including the famous Hillary Suspension Bridge. The trail passes through lush pine forests and picturesque villages such as Monjo and Jorsalle, where you’ll enter the Sagarmatha National Park.

After lunch, the trail climbs steeply for the final two hours—a challenging yet rewarding ascent to Namche Bazaar, the vibrant Sherpa capital and main trading hub of the Everest region. Along the way, you may catch your first glimpse of Mount Everest on a clear day.

Day 04: Acclimatization Hike to Hotel Everest View (3,880m) — 5/6 hours round trip, BLD, Teahouse

Today is an important acclimatization day to help your body adjust to the increasing altitude. After breakfast, you'll hike up to the famous Hotel Everest View, known as one of the highest-altitude hotels in the world, offering spectacular panoramic views of Mount Everest, Lhotse, Ama Dablam, and other Himalayan giants.

The hike is gradual but steady, passing through Syangboche airstrip and offering great photo opportunities. Once at the hotel, you can enjoy a cup of tea or coffee on the terrace while soaking in the incredible mountain scenery. After spending some time at the viewpoint, you'll descend back to Namche Bazaar, where you can spend the afternoon exploring local bakeries, shops, or visiting the Sherpa Museum.

Day 05: Trek from Namche Bazaar to Dole (3,680m) — 5/6 hrs, BLD, Teahouse

Leaving the bustling town of Namche behind, today’s trek takes you on a quieter route toward the Gokyo Valley. The trail begins with a gentle climb to Kyangjuma, offering spectacular views of Ama Dablam, Thamserku, and Kongde Ri. From here, the path diverges from the classic Everest Base Camp trail and ascends gradually through beautiful rhododendron and birch forests.

As you gain altitude, the landscape begins to change—trees give way to alpine shrubs and moss-covered boulders. After passing through small settlements like Tashinga, Lhabarma, and Luza, you arrive at the peaceful village of Dole, perched on the edge of the ridge with dramatic views of the valley below.

Day 06: Trek from Dole to Machhermo (3,870m) — 4/5 hrs, BLD, Teahouse

Today’s trek is a short but important one for gradual acclimatization. The trail steadily climbs out of Dole, offering increasingly dramatic views of Cho Oyu, Thamserku, and the surrounding snow-capped peaks. You’ll pass through quiet yak pastures and the small settlements of Luza and Lhabarma, following the Dudh Koshi River higher into the Gokyo Valley.

As you gain altitude, the vegetation becomes sparser, and the terrain more rugged. You’ll arrive in Machhermo by early afternoon—a scenic village nestled beneath towering cliffs. This is the site of a famous (and rare) yetti-sighting legend and home to a Himalayan Rescue Association (HRA) aid post, where altitude lectures are often held during the trekking season.

Use the rest of the day to rest, hydrate, and enjoy the views.

Day 07: Trek from Machhermo to Gokyo (4,750m) — 4/5 hrs, BLD, Teahouse

Today’s trek takes you into the heart of the Gokyo Valley, climbing steadily along a ridge with magnificent views of Kangtega, Cho Oyu, and the surrounding glaciers. The trail continues through alpine meadows and past chortens and mani walls, following the path beside the Dudh Koshi River.

You'll pass the first two of the Gokyo Lakes, their turquoise waters shimmering beneath towering peaks. After crossing a small bridge and climbing a final rocky moraine, you’ll reach Gokyo village, located beside the third and largest lake, Dudh Pokhari. Nestled at the base of Gokyo Ri, the village is a stunning high-altitude haven surrounded by snow-covered giants.

Arriving by early afternoon gives you time to rest, acclimatize, or take a short walk around the lake.

Day 08: Hike to Gokyo Ri (5,357m) & Return to Gokyo — 4/5 hrs round trip, BLD, Teahouse

Today is a highlight of the trek—an early morning hike to the summit of Gokyo Ri, one of the best viewpoints in the entire Everest region. The steep ascent takes about 2–3 hours, but the effort is richly rewarded with panoramic views of the Everest massif, Lhotse, Makalu, Cho Oyu, and the sprawling Ngozumpa Glacier, the largest glacier in Nepal.

From the summit (5,357m), you'll witness a breathtaking Himalayan sunrise if you start early. After spending time at the top taking in the views and capturing photos, you’ll descend back to Gokyo village for a warm meal and rest.

The afternoon can be used for further acclimatization, a short walk along the lake, or simply relaxing in the teahouse with views of the surrounding peaks.

Day 09: Trek from Gokyo to Mong La (3,973m) or Kyangjuma (3,550m) — 7/8 hrs, BLD, Teahouse

After enjoying the beauty of Gokyo, you’ll begin your descent along the same trail toward Dole and beyond. Retracing your steps past the stunning Gokyo Lakes and yak pastures, the trail offers a different perspective as you descend through alpine landscapes and into rhododendron-covered hillsides.

You’ll pass through Machhermo, Luza, and Dole, continuing either to Mong La, a peaceful ridge-top settlement with excellent mountain views, or further down to Kyangjuma, depending on your pace and preference.

Both destinations offer cozy teahouses and incredible sunset views of Ama Dablam and surrounding peaks.

Day 10: Trek from Mong La/Kyangjuma to Lukla (2,860m) — 7/8 hrs, BLD, Teahouse

Today marks your final day on the trail. After breakfast, you'll descend from Mong La or Kyangjuma to Namche Bazaar, where you can take a short break and soak in the last views of the high Himalayas.

From Namche, the trail descends steeply to cross the Hillary Suspension Bridge, then continues alongside the Dudh Koshi River, passing through familiar villages like Monjo, Phakding, and Chheplung. While mostly downhill, the route includes a few final uphill stretches before you arrive in Lukla.

In Lukla, you’ll celebrate the completion of your trek with your guide and porters. Take time to relax, reflect on your journey, and enjoy a hearty meal at the teahouse.

Day 11: Fly from Lukla to Ramechhap/Kathmandu (1,324m) — 25 min flight, B, Hotel

Today you’ll take an early morning flight from Lukla back to either Ramechhap or Kathmandu, depending on your flight arrangements. Enjoy the spectacular views of the Himalayas one last time as you fly over the rugged mountain terrain.

Upon arrival, you’ll be transferred to your hotel in Kathmandu for rest and relaxation. This marks the end of your trek, and you can spend the remainder of the day exploring the vibrant city or simply unwinding.

Day 12: Final Departure from Nepal, B

Today marks the end of your unforgettable journey in the Himalayas. After breakfast at your hotel, you will be transferred to Tribhuvan International Airport for your onward flight.

Our representative will assist you with check-in and farewell you with best wishes for your future adventures. Safe travels!

Hydration is key, especially at high altitudes. We strongly recommend drinking at least 3 liters of water daily. We provide water purification tablets or liquid solutions, and while boiled or bottled water is available at lodges (with a small additional cost), our guides will assist you in finding safe and sustainable water sources throughout the trail.

At Nature Lovers Treks and Tours, we pride ourselves on having the most experienced, licensed, and professional guides and porters in the industry. Our team members are not only highly trained in high-altitude trekking and first aid, but also deeply knowledgeable about local cultures, traditions, and geography.

Each trek is led by a lead trekking guide, supported by assistant guides and Sherpas depending on your group size. Our porters, who are the heart of our team, carry up to 25–30 kg of group gear each and are treated with the highest level of care and respect. We strictly follow the guidelines of the International Porter Protection Group (IPPG).

Cultural Insights and Local Interactions

The Gokyo Valley is home to the indigenous Sherpa communities, renowned for their hospitality and deep spiritual connection to the mountains. Along the way, you’ll have the chance to visit Buddhist monasteries, prayer flags, chortens, and learn about the Sherpa people's unique mountain lifestyle, culture, and religious beliefs.

Safety and Emergency Preparedness

Your safety is our highest priority. Every trek includes a comprehensive first aid medical kit, and our guides carry a pulse oximeter to monitor your oxygen saturation regularly.

We maintain 24/7 communication with our field team to ensure every group is safe and on track. Our guides are trained to handle emergency situations, and if necessary, we will coordinate rescue or evacuation services swiftly and professionally.

Solo Trekkers Are Welcome

Nepal is a very safe destination for solo travelers, and this trek is no exception. Whether you’re a solo female traveler or an adventurous lone trekker, our guided treks are designed to ensure your comfort and safety. Many solo trekkers choose to join our fixed departures or request a personalized solo trek.

Personal Expenses to Plan For

While the trekking package covers most essentials, there are some personal expenses to plan for, such as snacks, drinks, Wi-Fi, charging your devices, laundry, personal gear, souvenirs, and tips for guides and porters. We recommend carrying around $300–400 USD or the equivalent in Euros, and converting it to Nepali Rupees (NPR), as this is the accepted currency in most mountain lodges.

Shower Facilities During the Trek

Hot showers are available at most teahouses in the lower elevations for a small extra charge (usually $3–5 USD). At higher elevations (above 3,500 meters), expect more basic facilities—typically a bucket of hot water. Due to the risk of catching a cold, which can lead to altitude sickness, it’s advisable to shower only occasionally once you’ve reached higher elevations.

Laundry on the Trail

Laundry services are limited along the route. Some teahouses may offer laundry during acclimatization days, but generally, trekkers must hand-wash essential items or wait until returning to Kathmandu for a full laundry service. Please plan your packing accordingly.

Flight Delays – Important Note

The flights between Kathmandu and Lukla are known for being weather-dependent, with frequent delays or even cancellations due to unpredictable mountain weather. For this reason, we strongly advise all trekkers to keep at least 1–2 buffer days in your schedule, especially before your international return flight.

The Everest Gokyo Lake Trek is a less-traveled gem in the Everest region that offers an unforgettable Himalayan adventure filled with natural beauty, cultural richness, and a sense of achievement. With Nature Lovers Treks and Tours, you’re not just booking a trek—you’re embarking on a carefully crafted experience guided by a passionate and professional team.
