Bird watching in Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve is considered
as the best activity to do in Nepal for those who loves birds and wild lives.
Established in 1976, Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve 175km2 is the habitat for the
varieties of birds and animals, especially wetland for the rare species of
birds.
Koshi Tappu is located in the Eastern part of Nepal with the
access from the Mahendra Highway taking 10hrs by overland journey or 45mins by
flight to Biratnagar (with 2hrs drive). Located on the flood plains of Eastern
Nepal, the Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve offers important habitat for a
different species of wild lives, the last surviving population of Wild Buffalo
or Arna, many mammals and reptiles including Gigantic Dolphin and over 280
species of water birds including rare birds such as Greater Adjutant Stork,
Red-necked Falcon, Indian Skimmer, Indian Courser, Bengal and Lesser Floricans,
Hodgson’s Bushchat, Spot-billed Pelican, Lesser Adjutant Stork, Black-necked
Stork, Faceted Duck, Baer’s Pochard, Comb Duck, White-tailed Eagle, Imperial
Eagle, Pied Harrier, Caspian Tern, Black-bellied Tern, Stork-billed Kingfisher,
Swamp Francolin, Striated Grassbird, Bristled Grassbird, Magpie-robin and Asian
paradise flycatcher.
In addition Koshi Tappu also offers thrilling jungle safari,
an opportunity to enjoy canoeing down Sun Koshi River and a chance to immerse
down into the unique cultures and traditions of Thakali ethnic tribe. There are
the luxury camps inside the Wildlife Reserve which provides the ideal resting
place for all nature lovers seeking for peace within a paradise of nature. The
visit to Koshi Tappu can last from a couple of days to a couple of weeks
depending upon the choice.

Day 01: Flight from Kathmandu 40mins and drive to Koshi Tappu 1hr, BLD,
Lodge
The first thing to do in your short but most enjoyable trip
is to fly from Kathmandu to Biratnagar. You will be picked up and transferred
to the lodge for overnight stay. Short briefing and tour around a little bit.
Day 02: National Park program, BLD,
Lodge
After early breakfast in the morning, get ready for
the all-day excursion by walking, boating, tuktuk riding, followed by jeep/elephant riding. Enjoy the magnificent
nature while observing the wild lives, birds especially, reptiles and many more. Cultural program
of the local tribe after getting back to the lodge in the night time (if available).
Day 03: National Park program, BLD,
Lodge
Another day of the wonderful bird watching tour in the
wonderland. Capture and enjoy the beautiful floras and faunas' diversities this
park offers. Mostly you will be going to the swamps, watching water buffaloes (and nilgai, gangetic river dolphin, wild elephant, crocodiles, boar, deers, etc.), doing elephant ride and jungle safari while looking out for the
rare species of birds.
Day 04: Flight back to Kathmandu, BLD,
Hotel
Final day in the haven of bird watching in Nepal. After the
early morning breakfast, leave for the Biratnagar and later fly back to
Kathmandu.
